On the density of primes in arithmetic progression having a prescribed primitive root

Let g ∈ Q be not −1 or a square. Let Pg denote the set of primes p such that g is a primitive root mod p. Let 1 ≤ a ≤ f, (a, f) = 1. Under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH) it can be shown that the set of primes p ∈ Pg with p ≡ a(mod f) has a natural density. In this note this density is explicitly evaluated. This generalizes a classical result of Hooley.

Counting primes, groups, and manifolds.

Let Lambda=SL(2)(Z) be the modular group and let c(n)(Lambda) be the number of congruence subgroups of Lambda of index at most n. We prove that lim(n--> infinity )(log c(n)(Lambda)/((log n)(2)/log log n))=(3-2(sqrt)2)/4. The proof is based on the Bombieri-Vinogradov "Riemann hypothesis on the average" and on the solution of a new type of extremal problem in combinatorial number theory. Similar ...

On the subsequence of primes having prime subscripts

There are a number of subsets of primes with a conjectured density of a constant times x/ log x. These include the primes separated by a fixed even integer, Sophie Germain primes and the so-called “thin primes”, i.e. primes of the form 2q − 1 where q is prime [3]. In order to gain some familiarity with sequences of this density we undertook an investigation of the set of primes of prime order, ...

Probability of having $n^{th}$-roots and n-centrality of two classes of groups

In this paper, we consider the finitely 2-generated groups $K(s,l)$ and $G_m$ as follows:$$K(s,l)=langle a,b|ab^s=b^la, ba^s=a^lbrangle,\G_m=langle a,b|a^m=b^m=1, {[a,b]}^a=[a,b], {[a,b]}^b=[a,b]rangle$$ and find the explicit formulas for the probability of having nth-roots for them. Also, we investigate integers n for which, these groups are n-central.

The Primes: Infinitude, Density and Substance

The title of this section is surely, along with the uniqueness of factorization, the most basic and important fact in number theory. The first recorded proof was by Euclid, and we gave it at the beginning of the course. There have since been (very!) many other proofs, many of which have their own merits and drawbacks. It is entirely natural to look for further proofs: in terms of the arithmetic...
